Dirty
Diesels Done Dirt Cheap |
These
are the individuals whose decisions are responsible for committing the
Province to diesel technology and directly impacting the health of the people living along the rail corridor. The responsibility lessens somewhat as you scroll down the page, at least for now. |

Dalton McGuinty. Premier of Ontario. |

|
George Smitherman. Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. Formerly Minister
of Health until June 20, 2008 when he swapped with Caplan. Here
is an FOI request that his Ministry denied. Smitherman's office ignored my request for an interview. |
Jim Bradley. Minister of Transportation. Used to be the Minister of the Environment from 1985 - 1990 under the Petersen government. Has held the riding of St Catherines since 1977! Has managed to stay out of the spotlight on this issue. His office ignored my request for an interview. To see the log of how various political offices responded go here. |
John Gerretsen. Minister of the Environment. This Ministry has a fundamental effect on what technology is used. Gerretsen could have made the project electric but instead gave the green light to diesel technology with some conditions. His office ignored my request for an interview. |
David Caplan was Minister of Health before he resigned due to scandal. He was Minister of Energy and Infrastructure until June 20, 2008 when he swapped with Smitherman. Was involved with the OLG scandal and there were calls for his resignation. Resigned because of the e-health scandal. I'm not sure if I trust anyone who looks like the Family Guy. Don't know if he figures in this yet. |
Laura Albanese. MPP for York Weston. Formerly a broadcast journalist
with Omni television. Narrowly won her seat in 2007.
|
Tony Ruprecht. MPP for Davenport (my riding). The definition of useless. If you think I'm being mean wait until you see the film! Here's the letter sent out by Tony to a few his constituents - about 100 or so households. The original was addressed to Scott Dobson, a neighbour of mine, and that was the heading on the document we received at our homes. Since then he found the time to change the heading to 'Dear friends'. |
Gerard Kennedy. MP for Parkdale-High Park. Took him quite a while to get on board with this issue. I attended a constituency meeting in September and he talked as if he stood with the community against electric trains. When asked if he would participate in the Human Train March he said he would not participate in such a 'negative' exercise. Upon further study of his written statements and his talk he avoided using the words 'electric trains'. He eventually showed up at the 'negative' rally he said he would not attend. Peggy Nash, an NDP candidate whom Kennedy narrowly defeated in the 2008 election, spoke at the rally. |
Mario Silva is the MP for the riding where I live, Davenport. He agreed to do an interview with me then bailed at the last minute without explanation. He did agree to do a phone interview though then during the call tried to shift the responsibility for this issue onto the City. Since then he has put up a statement on his web site supporting the use of electric trains. Beyond that... |
Alan Tonks is the MP for the riding of York-Weston. Not sure where he stands though he has written letters supporting the electric views of his constituents. |
Donna Cansfield is currently the Minister of Natural Resources in the McGuinty government. She was Minister of Transportation from May 2006 to October 2007 before she moved into her current portfolio. Before that she was provincial Minister of Energy from 2005 - 2006. This letter from Mike Sullivan to Cansfield when she was Minister of Transportation offers a glimpse into the beginnings of this affair. |
Adam Giambrone. City Councillor for Ward 18 and Chair of the TTC. He was one of the elected officials on the Metrolinx Board until May 2009 when the board was replaced with private citizens who are unaccountable to the public. Several people have said his office was helpful in assisting residents with their pile driving complaints. He did an interview with me for the film. |
Cheri DiNovo. MPP for Parkdale-High Park and an outspoken advocate for electric trains. She did an interview with me for the film. Her office was the easiest to deal with by far. To see the log of how various political offices responded to my request for an interview go here. |
